Community Involvement - Look! Youth Photography Workshop

For the outreach component of my internship with The Local @NYTimes in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill this summer, I ran a camera workshop with kids. Community members, City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism coaches and editors, and photographers at The New York Times shared their time, cameras, and advice with the six young people who participated. During their final session, Mary Ann Giordano, editor of The Local, shared stories from the field and taught the students what it means to be a journalist. Josh Haner offered a detailed critique of the students’ best images, warmly encouraging each student and giving them clear directions on how to improve their work.

At graduation, all the students received certificates and prints of their best images. The students who had been taking photographs with used cameras received new ones, donated anonymously. Check out Look! At These Young Photojournalists for a slideshow by each student and a class photo.

Several of the young people and their best photographs were featured in the print edition of the Metropolitan section of The Times on Sunday August 2, 2009.

The young people who participated are still emailing me their latest shots.
